Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Pat Conover: Seeking Outside the Circle

December 06, 1998

If you are grounded in the love of Jesus you have no reason to fear full and honest conversation with other religions. It is only if you think that Christianity is a big argument, or if your faith is based on reasoning about things you can’t know, that you can become confused by Buddhism, or Hinduism, or Hopi.

David W. Lloyd: Celebrating From Pentecost Into Advent

November 29, 1998

The Advent theme this year is “Just enough.” I have struggled to understand why the Celebration Circle has chosen this as a theme for Advent. The messages from the Hebrew Scriptures for today are not about finding or receiving “just enough.”

Jim Hall: Building an Ark for Earth Scripture: Tending God’s Wilderness Word

November 22, 1998

As we retell the story of John proclaiming God’s wilderness word along the Jordan River, we remember the story of the Jordan itself. For a thousand years since King Solomon of Israel had begun intensive logging of the Cedars of Lebanon, the Jordan watershed had been deteriorating. This deforestation left the river prone to floods. It was to John and the Jordan, that Jesus came to immerse himself in a ministry of redemption for the landless, the landed, and the landscape.

Kate Amoss: November Sermon

November 15, 1998

November is the month of apocalypse — the month of unveiling and uncovering. In November, the earth disrobes. Her bright shimmering garb of red and gold leaves falls. Naked trunks and limbs are exposed to the cold autumn light. The underlying structure of the world is revealed — the hidden purpose of creation laid bare. We see the trees bridging the divide between earth and heaven. Apocalypse is about dispelling illusion and seeing deeply into the marrow of existence.
