Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Feel free to use what is helpful from these sermons. We only ask that when substantial portions are abstracted or used in a written work, please credit Seekers Church and the author, and cite the URL.
Carolyn D. Shields: Focused on Commitment
October 03, 1999
Be careful when you give a committed, Warriors’ focus to something, because your life might get turned upside down. Three of us from my work place, participated in the AIDS Ride. Since then, both of my co-workers have left for jobs that are better suited to them, one of whom, unfortunately, happened to be my assistant. Ken, who was part of the ride, quit his job and has enrolled in massage school full time. Jackie is in Guatemala right now because she doesn’t want to live out her life without being bilingual. Kate is now clear that starting a counseling practice is the direction her career should take.
Marjory Zoet Bankson: Exploring Commitment
September 19, 1999
Forty years ago, when Peter proposed marriage on New Year’s Eve, I wept — and said, “Do you really know what you are asking?” — because I wanted his assurance that he intended it to be a lifetime commitment before I said “Yes.” I was scared to let go of my hard-earned independence, afraid of being taken advantage of, weak in my own ability to love fully and freely. I feel the same way about recommitment to Seekers.
Pat Conover: Looking Ahead with Seekers
September 12, 1999
When I was a Presbyterian we were warned against the Free Church tradition because it was subject to abuse and the excesses of enthusiasm. Clergy were needed to guard the tradition against error. As an ordained United Church of Christ minister, one of my few distinctive powers is the right to administer communion. But who wants administered communion anyway. It’s sort of like administered poetry or administered lovemaking.
Deborah Sokolove: Body of Christ, Cup of New Life
September 05, 1999
Once upon a time, Jesus was having dinner with his friends, and, as usual, he said a blessing over the bread and the wine before handing them round the table. He and his friends liked to sing and to tell stories. But this time, Jesus said some strange things.
Kate Amoss: Jigsaw Jesus
August 29, 1999
Throughout the gospel, Jesus touches and is touched. Compassionate touch is central to his ministry. He touched children and women as well as men. He touched untouchables.
