A Prayer to Remember God’s Unchanging Presence Surrounding Us

Praying for Peace and Justice on November 24, 2024

We get to choose

Oh Divine Presence,

It is so easy these days to feel ourselves deep in the darkness of fear, injustice, separateness, anguish, hopelessness, and abandonment.  You remind us that You are an unchanging Presence surrounding us.  This is a universal Law on which we can depend.  It is not our pleas that bring you to consciousness; you come when we least expect you in the darkest part of the night.  The pain of waiting is in proportion to the joy of resurrection.  We get to choose resurrection.

So we ask you to remind us always to seek your presence; to knock when we are afraid; to open the door to let you in.

A Prayer of Lament for the Continued Suffering of the Palestinian People

Praying for Peace and Justice on November 17, 2024

Loving Spirit

We lack the words to fully describe the broken heartedness we feel as we witness the continued suffering of the Palestinian people.  Amid the famine, disease and genocide, we hear the cries of your people struggling to survive, grieving for loved ones, not knowing where to turn for safety.

Mother of Justice and Compassion,

We cry out for those who are crushed beneath the horrors of occupation and unjust systems of relentless oppression. We lament the shattering of human rights and our participation in the violent destruction of a people and their homeland.

A Sung Prayer on the Eve of a Federal Election

Praying for Peace and Justice on November 3, 2024

By the Time You Hear This Song

By the time you hear this song, we’ll know
If everything went wrong, we’ll know
If decency sings louder than fear
By the time you hear this song

By the time you hear my voice, we’ll know
The meaning of the choice, we’ll know
If it was just another election year
By the time you hear my voice

Hosanna, hosannna

By the time you hear this song, we’ll know
Where you and I belong
By the time you hear this song

A Prayer for the Grace and Strength to work for Peace

Praying for Peace and Justice on October 20, 2024

Let us pray.

Holy One,

As Jeremiah cried out, “Peace, peace, when there is no peace.”

In Matthew’s Gospel, to be consoled, because peace is no more in our land.  Holy One, we cry out: Peace, peace when there is no peace.

Without justice, there can be no peace.  Give us the grace and strength to work for peace in our world, in our relationships, in our streets, in our community, and in our country.

In Your many names we pray: Amen

A Prayer to Turn the Hearts of Those Who Do Violence Out of Their Own Oppression

Praying for Peace and Justice on September 29, 2024

Lord, what can we pray that has not already been prayed? We join our hearts with the millions of people who, for centuries, have cried out for peace and justice in Israel and Palestine. This conflict is so complex, and so intertwined with the roots of antisemitism and colonialism and anti-muslim rhetoric and white supremacist ideology and we do not see the way out. But we believe that you are the God who turned Saul into Paul, that you can turn the hearts of those who would do violence out of their own oppression and fear, and change them into those who walk the way of love.…
