SEEKERS CHURCH
Stewards Minutes
October 2, 2016
5:30 p.m.
Present: Marjory Bankson (recorder), Peter Bankson, Kevin Barwick, Ken Burton (moderator), Cynthia Dahlin (worship), Joan Dodge, Michele Frome, Judy Lantz, David Lloyd, Sandra Miller, Trish Nemore, Keith Seat, Vincent Shepherd, Margreta Silverstone, Deborah Sokolove, and Jacqie Wallen
Absent: Brenda Seat
Worship was offered by Cynthia, using a quote from Fredrick Buechner’s “Longing For Home” to reflect on the Call of Stewards, which we read together.
Housekeeping: Stewards will next meet on Sunday, November 6, 5pm at the church.
Moderator: Deborah Worship: Sandra
Recorder: Peter Angels: Trish & Joan
Takoma Street Festival: Joan (for Outreach Mission Group)
Our booth at the corner of Carroll St. and Carroll Ave. was busy and central; passed out about 300 cups of lemonade even tho the weather was cool; children’s table drew fairly constant visitors.
Sandra added that the location brought more interest in the church from people who had been there for meetings or who walked by. She thought it was a more effective use of our resources than the Folk Festival.
School of Christian Living: Dave
Current classes are drawing about 18 people, with a good mix of new and experienced members. He described the attached schedule of classes for the upcoming year.
Children’s Team: Judy
The team (Sallie Holmes, Larry Rawlings, Jacqie, Dave & Judy) has met 7 times to plan and coordinate. The study schedule for the older kids is attached; they will do Thanksgiving baskets on Nov 19 and decorate the church for Advent on 28 Nov. In the Spring, they will explore “How to Live as a Christian.”
Trish expressed enormous appreciation for the work they are doing as a team!
Ecumenical Council: Peter
In addition to summarizing developments reported by each of the churches, he shared Kayla’s news that she would be moving out of Andrews House (where she has offered hospitality to C of S visitors for 19 years) because the Festival Center Board has decided to sell the current Discipleship Year house and move the DYers into Andrews House. Kayla and Trish Stefanik are in conversation with Dayspring about moving into Overlook (the McClanen house) and offering retreat space for individuals and small groups there.
He also reported that the projected budget from Kayla for the CofS office for 2017 is $41,565, or $5,200 from each member faith community. (Since some communities will not be able to provide that much support, all communities are encouraged to be as generous as possible.
Budget for 2017: Marjory (for FOG)
With 75% of the year complete, Marjory offered the attached summary of income and expenses:
Although it appears that we have a significant deficit, giving is usually slim over the summer and she hopes we will meet the income budget by the end of the year. Because of significant ice damage to the gutters, T&S has spent most of its budget on the building and may draw from the capital reserve (about $40,000) to cover some of that. Judy asked about replacing play equipment in the back yard and Deborah said that T&S is discussing that.
Recommitment as Stewards: Trish
Stewards named what was “fresh and alive” for them in considering recommitment this year, and all except Kevin, who is uncertain, will recommit.
Two Stewards to share: Jacqie & Marjory
Soul talk completed our time together.
