A Basket of Summer Fruit

Silent Reflection

God smiles when I reach out
for one more kiss
because it feels so wonder full.

Christ is swimming
in the drop of water on your cheek.
Is that a tear?

We make Spirit when we dance.
Do you see it in the air around you?

Can eating watermelon
be communion with the universe?

I am created in God’s image,
and my mouth loves buttered corn.

Does God’s mouth love?

Peter Bankson.

Prelude

Call To Worship

Leader:
Summer gardens are blooming.
Fruits and vegetables cover our tables
and delight our senses.

People:

God’s abundance is manifest.
Leader:
All of creation is showered with greening refreshment —
the vitality to bear fruit.
Unison:
Come, worship God.

Litany of Summer

Leader:
In summer we find ourselves
caught up in different rhythms.
People:
We love the longer days,
and yearn for time to rest and play.
Leader:
And yet our work goes on;
the needs of others do not go away.
People:
Just when we’d like to rest,
the time of harvest is upon us,
and the heat seems like it will never end.
Leader:
Christ is beside us in the sun-baked fields,
offering the living water he carries for us all.
People:
God gives us summertime,
and different rhythms, too.
Unison:
God gives, and that is good.

Prayers

Common Confession
Leader:
In summer we find ourselves
caught up in different rhythms.
People:
We love vacations for ourselves,
but sometimes begrudge them for others.
We do not want the greater responsibilities
left behind when others go away.
Unison:
We choose the ways we live our lives,
and yet we’re restless with the choices we have made.
O God of summer richness, forgive our selfish ways.
Individual Prayers of Confession
Assurance
Leader:
On the seventh day God rested,
and we can do the same:
God is here to love and re-create us
for the days to come.

Amen.
