Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Peter Bankson: What IS This Living Water?

March 07, 1999

One of our best programs in Washington State is being closed because a political shift has dried up the only funding “spring” they had. When dedicated people doing God’s work call in desperation looking for enough money to make their next payroll, it feels like they’ve got the telephone in one hand and a fist-sized stone in the other. Like Moses’ lieutenants, I am in the cash-flow wilderness with local program people all around me, murmuring: “Why did you lead us out here into the desert to let us die of thirst?”

Bob Bayer: Crossing Bridges, Building Bridges

February 28, 1999

Like the Israelites, we walk our personal and community journeys trying to obey God’s promptings. The Spirit’s entree has come through the questions, “What does it mean to be incarnate? Is my sexuality only a source of temptation and pain, or is it also a gift to be celebrated?” Does your spirit dwell within a lively body, or do you feel more like Ezekiel’s dried bones?

Hope and A Home Staff: On Hope and A Home

February 21, 1999

We come together to celebrate ourselves, our families, our community, and our relationship to the God of our understanding. We commit ourselves to: good homes for our families, good health and education for our children, and good management of our money toward a secure future. We will build on our strengths, ask for help when we need it, and offer aid to others when we can. We know that life can be difficult as well as joyous. We are here to learn from each other, to encourage each other, and to create a brighter future for us all. To these ideals we commit ourselves

Paul Holmes: Christ for Kids

February 14, 1999

A couple of weeks ago, I was helping the kids brush their teeth. While squeezing some disgusting Tweety Bird toothpaste onto his toothbrush, Andrew looked me in the eye and asked, “Dad, could you please get us some Christ for Kids?” That stopped me in my tracks. “Excuse me?” I responded. And he repeated, “Could you please get us some Christ for Kids?” He really wanted Crest for Kids, but the point was made.

Deborah Sokolove: The True Presence

January 31, 1999

I was transported to those uncountable times when I would stand next to my father in the synagogue, trying to follow along as he chanted the incomprehensible words that now, amazingly, I understand. Glen, burdened with no such memories, exclaimed, “It’s just like the Catholic Mass!” And so it is. Except for the references to Jesus. The Jewish order of worship is filled with the same kinds of praise, petition and thanksgiving as in any liturgical church: a set order of prayers that ends with a blessing over the wine.
